Fortune Ferguson is a charismatic and outgoing Health and Fitness instructor at McMahon Middle School in Belmont, North Carolina. Beloved by her students and close to her family, Fortune has a lot going right in her life. Except she's never had much luck with guys. Maybe it's because she's never met the right one. But more likely it's because she's outright disgusted by them. Fortune's a lesbian. And at her 28th birthday party, she spectacularly comes out. Everyone in Fortune's family is thrown, including her needy, self-involved mother Ginger (Annie Potts), her taciturn father Mike, and her naive brother Tyler. Yet despite their prejudices and misgivings, the family comes to support Fortune and her new identity, proving that the bonds of family are unconditional and unwavering.
